Red Robot Labs snaps up UK developer Supermono to make location games
wants to "do something profound that players really love"
cool the success of his debut in the game of life is a crime in Android, USA location-based game publisher Red Robot Laboratory has acquired British developer Supermono and appointed a former leader Sony Computer Entertainment, Phil Harrison as a consultant.
Supermono, who managed productivity applications EpicWin App store and racing game without end forever the drive, now gets to work creating games for the location using the platform Red Robot R2, in an effort to encourage third-party developers also use it.
red robot was founded in January 2011 in Palo Alto, near the road from the headquarters of Google. CEO Mike Ouye background is in social games and CrowdStar Playdom, while the official product manager Pete Hawley worked at Electronic Arts, Criterion Games and Sony Computer Entertainment.
Lifeis the crime was released in August Android. "We are now 800,000 users and is consistently one of the 10 most successful application on Android, so we're very happy," said Ouye in an interview.
Hawley added that the focus instead Red Robot was there from the beginning. "We wanted to make games that were all in place," he said. "I do not want to make icons with Google Maps to shit on it, and not a second what we think the check-in or retailers or coupons or otherwise hidden. We want to do something deeper than the real players love. "
Red Robot is one of the most well-funded startups in this space, which raised U.S. $ 8.5 billion in September from Benchmark Capital, Shasta Ventures, and co-founder Rick Thompson Playdom . The company had raised a round of $ 2 million in angel financing.
"We are working on three or four games now only focused on the location," says Hawley. "From 18 to 35 years old, men love a competitive game and pay for content, but if you are in this age group and love the game, not much around to serve on the phones. "
These games are both a business platform for Red robot R2, which includes the Geo-index of places that can be used for location-based game. The appearance of the platform is also distinguished the company from its rivals such as Booyah and Grey Area Labs, which (for now) to focus exclusively on making your own games, instead of opening its technology to other developers.
"Supermono acquisition will accelerate the growth of the R2 platform, because it relies on them," said Ouye. "It's important to find someone to help your experience and scale."
Fung TakSupermono founder says he can not wait to start working on these games, saying the platform R2 and Red Robot team of engineers will study to focus on creativity rather than the underlying technology.
- "We had an idea based on the previous location, but we knew what to do with the four of us would take about 50 years! I think we made some really good applications so far, but now we have the firepower that actually achieve. "
