Institute for Creative Technologies Continues to Churn Out Troop Helping Tech

06/23/2010 Institute for Creative Technologies continues to churn out troops Help Technology

Miller-McCune went insideUniversity of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) and came out armed with information on new trainers and simulators helping U.S. troops.

The center is hard at work on fleshing out (get it?) virtual human technology, which the piece's author states "will most certainly be used in many training and educational roles" in the future. The technology will also inevitably make its way to consumer-based videogames, at least according to ICT's Bill Swartout, who thinks we will all be talking to our games and "interacting with people who're talking back" eventually.

One of the ICT's latest creations is the Mobile Counter-IED Interactive Trainer (MCIT). As shown in the embedded video, the trainer, housed in trailers (hence, mobile) lets users train on both sides of the "game," both as soldier's looking to spot IEDs and insurgent's trying to figure out the best place to plant them.

NPD Offers 2009 Sales Estimates

06/18/2010 NPD Offers 2009 Sales Estimates

According to estimates released by NPD Group, U.S. consumers spent $4.5 - $.4.75 billion on used games, rentals, subscriptions, digital downloaded games, downloadable content, and mobile applications. This data comes from refined "point-of-sale tracking, consumer research (using tools like Games Acquisition Monitor, Video Game & PC Game Subscriptions Tracker, and Consumer Purchase Tracker), and figures provided by NPD retail and its publisher partners," according to a Gamasutra report.

A good portion of that figure, the report says, comes from downloadable content and digitally distributed games. This helped bring the total amount consumers spent on video games in 2009 to $15.0 - $15.25 billion. The other $10.5 million in that figure comes from consumers buying physical media, though a breakdown of that data (how much was from new versus used games, for example) was not available.

NPD also pointed out that this figure excluded social networking game titles: Read More

Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform (Pragmatic Programmers)

[[[Hello, Android: Introducing Google 's Mobile Platform Development (Pragmatic Programmers)]]]

Description:

Android is a software toolkit for mobile phones, created by Google and Open Handset Alliance. He "inside the millions of cell phones and other mobile devices, making Android a major platform for application developers. This could be your own program works on all these devices.

Getting started developing with Android is very simple. You don 't even need access to the phone Android, just a computer, where you can install the Android SDK and emulator phone that comes with it. A few minutes later, "Hello, Android" will help you create your first application running: a version of Android 'on "Hello, World."

From there you LL 'to create a more significant example: the game Android Sudoku. By gradually adding new features to the game throughout the book, you LL 'to learn about many aspects, including the Android software user interfaces, multimedia and the Android life cycle.

This second edition has been completely revised for Android 1.5 (Cupcake) and Android 1.6 (a bagel). Each page and an example has been revised and updated for compatibility with the new version. In addition, two new applications to show you how to create widgets for the screen and publish your application in the Android Market.

If you 're busy developer who' d rather coding than reading about coding, this book is for you. To help you find what you need to know fast, each chapter ends with "Fast-forward" section. Those sections provide guidance, where you should go further when you need to read a book down.

More review here

As for books, one of the things that I treasure most honest relationship between the title and content. Unfortunately, it 's quite common to find books there promising things that they Don t fullfill'.

So I mostly recommend this book for beginners, mainly for two reasons:

1. It starts with a clean slate: nothing is assumed, so that sa 'a good time to start as a developer Android.
2. Brevity: I 't have time for the 8-100-page book, to begin to develop. I LL 'deal with the ins and outs as I go, not before.

Of course, like all books about Android, Java (or C + +, C #, etc.) The basic idea here is recommended.

And I have to take another star off just to make me a code game Sudoku as a prime example of the code through the whole book. Gag.
